A lot of restaurants are all bark and no bite. They are full of too much hype and not enough flavor. From food trucks to hole in the walls to 5 star establishments, I'm here to answer the question on everyone's mind, "Is it really that good!" I am not an Iron Chef let alone a line cook. I'm just an ordinary girl who loves to eat extraordinary food.

Grill 'Em All Truck

Where the heck have I been? Why have I NEVER tried anything from this truck. Why didn’t I know that Grill ‘Em All won the first season of The Great Food Truck Race? I haven’t been Food Truckin’ it lately but Grill ‘Em All made an appearance at the Tropical Shave Ice/Rich’s Shrimp Shack brick and mortar one Wednesday night, and since it’s close to my house I couldn’t pass up the chance to try a few things.

I first tried their homemade tater tots with truffle oil and garlic aioli dipping sauce. These things were surprisingly HUGE and even more surprisingly GOOD. It’s not your ordinary frozen tater tot. It was smashed potatoes but still with little chunks breaded with seasoned panko bread crumbs. When you bite into one the cheese inside just oozes right out. It’s simply amazing by itself, but when dipped in the garlic aioli it's phenomenal.  I couldn’t stop eating them but I had to since I had some other things to try.

Munchos are my absolutely favorite chips in the whole world so there was no question I had to get the Blue Cheer burger. This burger had a bleu cheese spread, cranberry gastrique and munchos. The burger was so juicy, cooked to perfection. I like how the bun was toasted on the outside and that it was sweet, but I think the bun was a little too dry. Even with the blue cheese and gastrique, you can still taste a lot of bread, maybe too much.  I also wished it had more Munchos inside.

It wouldn’t be a visit to the Grill ‘Em All truck without ordering the Behemoth.  Grilled cheese buns, cheddar cheese, bacon, beer soaked onions, pickles and bbq sauce are what makes this burger a Behemoth.. YES, I said grilled cheese buns! The burger, the cheese, the onions, the bacon in between two grilled cheese sandwiches.. HOLY HECK. When I saw this burger I don’t know which was open wider, my eyes or my mouth. This thing was ginormous!!!! The name definitely fits the burger. My mouth seriously isn’t big enough to take a bite of the entire burger. I thought it was going to be too much with the grilled cheese sandwiches, but it wasn’t. The grilled cheese by itself was so good, so buttery and toasted. The beer soaked onions were really good too. The bacon was still really crispy.  The burger was cooked perfectly and everything just went so well together.  Everything about this burger was perfect if you're not looking at fat and calories!

Overall $29 for the tater tots, 2 burgers, a bottled water and coke was definitely worth it. Go hungry because the portions are big!

Wassup with Wasabi's? Tex Wasabi's - Sacramento, CA

You’re not a foodie if you don’t know the name Guy Fieri. You are not a foodie if you haven’t watched an episode of Triple D (Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives).. Yeah, you know that “Guy” that hosts Guys Big Bite, winner of the first season of The Next Foodnetwork Star. He may know how to eat but does he really know how to cook? I mean, anyone can basically tell you what tastes good. We visited Northern California one weekend and one of his restaurants in Sacramento, Tex Wasabi, was on my list to try.

For starters, we ordered the calamari (not pictured-$10.95), garlic fries ($5.95), and the red dragon roll ($13.95). We had to order the calamari because the  description said “some of the best calamari you’ll ever try.”  By itself, the calamari was bland. It was fried nicely but it had way too much breading. What made it good was the thai dipping sauce that came with it.  So it should have described as the "best calamari dip you'll every try."

The garlic fries were really good. The fries were crisp and the generous mixture of the chopped garlic, parmesan cheese, salt and chopped parsley was perfect. I couldn’t stop eating these. The Red Dragon roll is a California roll topped with spicy tuna and rolled in tempura bits. Although there was nothing special or different about this roll, I really did like it. The unagi sauce was also very good. I guess Guy knows his sushi rolls.

Ed and I shared the Oyster Po-boy sandwich ($13.95), “Fresh oysters dusted in seasoned cornmeal flour & fried.” I was really disappointed with this dish. Although the flavor of the spread was good, the oysters that were used were so small. They were so small so you couldn’t taste much of the oyster over all the breading. So with the thickness of the French roll, the lettuce, and the dressing, you wouldn't be able to tell what kind of po-boy you were eating.
For dessert we ordered the chocolate bread pudding a la mode. I’m not really a bread pudding kinda gal, but for some reason,  this was the only dessert that really appealed to me. I’ve tasted bread puddings before that were just mushy. This one was really good! It had the texture of a freshly baked, soft, fluffy cinnamon roll that was drenched in sauce and there chunks of chocolate in some bites. It came out warm and it melted in my mouth. It didn’t need the ice cream, but I do like eating warm desserts with that cold contrast of the ice cream.

Don’t expect gourmet, don’t expect a hoity-toity atmosphere, and don’t expect extraordinary food. Although he is a pleasure to watch, the food at Tex Wasabi was just ordinary. I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to have one of their best meals of their life but would recommend it to those who live in that area who want to just hang out with friends and listen to the live band while having drinks and appetizers.
